I saw an article on The Age "Coming out: gay friendly school form rainbow alliance" (Farrah Tomazin October 21, 2010) which talked about the difficulties high school students across the state may face when they show their pride of their sexual orientation, and the dangers of being targeted because of that.
I must admit that not only is homophobia present in schools, but also churches. CATHOLIC churches. I personally have not heard any remarks directed any one person who was homosexually orientated, for the sake of hurting their feelings or mocking them for their sexual orientation. However, I have experienced infinite times the pain of listening to gay jokes, to homophobic comments, and to be talked about like I was diseased.
Since the author of this article is still in the closet, I can't go up to these people in my church who are making the jokes and comments to STOP IT because it will give me away. My facial expression will show the disappointment and anger. I can only rely on others to tell these culprits to respect those who are same-sex attracted, but these people who will stand up for me are not always available.
In the mean time, I'm trying to reflect on all that I say, just in case I've hurt somebody like myself who cannot defend themselves.
